This book is a stand-alone piece of delight. Get ready to fall in love with Eudora. And all her supporting characters. Her life has been hard. At first, you might think she is just a grumpy, old woman. Give her a chance because she is anything but.We learn about Eudora, now in her late 80s, and trace her history, from her days as a young girl in England during World War II. A father who goes off to war, a mother in dire straits, pregnant with her baby sister. It seems the weight of the world is left upon little Dora’s shoulders.Twilight-years Eudora is a throwback to another time. Despite her outward grumpiness, there is something admirable about her nature. She manages to leave her house at least once a day. Self-reliant, not one to fuss with companionship, or so she tells herself. A few aches here and there, which she expects come with her age. So be it. If this is it, she sees no reason to struggle and is determined to choose leaving this world on her own terms.Enter her new next-door neighbor. The 10-year-old Rose bursts onto the page with a realistic exuberance that is displayed in her daily sartorial choices replete with glittery unicorns and rainbows and fast-talking chatter. The characters and the journey they took each other on while saving themselves and each other. I loved this book and it's main character Eudora Honeysett. She is interesting and determined. The story of how she came to have a purpose in her life was endearing and also reflective. I was turning 70 as I read this book and it gave me much to think about. The story is a lot like A Man Called Ove where the character finds true purpose when they open their lives just a little and let others in. I would definitely recommend.
